Don’t get burned on the job: From aerospace, automotive and food processing locations to pulp and paper, electronic, and pharmaceutical manufacturers a large number of manufacturing facilities use high-voltage electrical equipment.

The NFPA 70E, the national consensus standard for electrical safety in the workplace, established countrywide guidelines to address the safety precautions of employees. Including a spectrum of professions—such as electricians and maintenance workers within a facility—the standards are based on the electrical energy hazards that could be relevant within a given workplace.

The NFPA 70E addresses the conditions under which personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing is most likely needed or required, as well as the level of protection that is crucial, across a variety of workplace environments.

Selecting your FR Long Sleeve Shirt

In order to select the most appropriate FR Sleeve Shirt for your intended application, you first need to identify the required arc rating or PPE Category.

What is the ARC rating based on?

The ARC rating is based on the incident’s outburst energy level which could generate at least a second-degree burn on exposed skin, through the fabric used for the garment. (Specifically, where the incident energy on the skin equals 1.2 cal/cm squared.)

There are two ways to determine the needed protection level

You can perform an incident energy analysis or you can use the PPE task tables that have been established within the NFPA 70E standard. The incident energy analysis value (cal/cm²) will identify the minimum arc rating for the clothing. If using the task tables, the different PPE categories (CAT 1, 2, 3 or 4) that have been established based on the common electrical equipment in the workplace and the equipment’s potential arc-flash PPE category mandates a minimum ARC rating for garments and lists any additional PPE that should be worn.

The tables also list the Arc-Flash boundary and appropriate working distance for each task shown in the table.
